La Gombe
La Gombe or Gombe (formerly Kalina, after the lieutenant, E. Kallina) is a central district in Kinshasa City, in the north of Kinshasa Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It is bounded on the north by the Congo River and in the south by the Boulevard du 30 Juin.

La Gombe is both a residential area and Kinshasa's business district. It also houses some of the DRC's principal governing bodies, including the Palais de la Nation and the Banque Centrale du Congo on the Boulevard Colonel Tshatshi. Various ministries, diplomatic and media organizations are also situated there.

The offices of Kinshasa's governor are located in La Gombe, making it the capital of Kinshasa Province.

The shield structure is held together by straps, when the flag is flown, it seems as though the shield motif has been sewn together. The red and the green, the castles surrounding more shields, it seems like other flags. The strapwork is noticeable and interesting and is an important part of the flag.

"田" is so funny here. One thinks of getting the harvest in and then setting to making frames for rice seedlings over the winter, for the planting. It's important to make the frames, a lot of scientific and technological thought is expressed here, and they seem a lot like pallets at the factory to me in their function and role.

田 is also a map of a ricefield, obviously. I grew up in an agricultural area in New England, fans of geology and geography know that Southern New England has a similar agricultural value to Long Island, home of legendary potato fields, Yaz, and famous tomatoes, as seen on tv's Seinfeld. I worked on the farm and lived for a month on an orange grove in Cheju, it was there that I understood how a farmer will think of his farm as a 田, and then take each quadrant and think of the quadrant as a 田, so on down to the individual plants or trees, all of which makes it possible to keep track of each precious one. I think graph paper was invented by farmers, (x + y)(x - y) and so forth.

Recipe Talk: Coconut Milk

Coconut milk is good and good for you. Reading some recipes at 'the place that sells the canned Thai curry', one learns that it is ok to simmer coco milk for a long time, and one should fry meat and vegetables with the material at the top of the can of milk. Excellent information.

Making Thai curry from a small can of red curry, green curry, tamarind curry, etc, is simple, one follows the English language instructions on the label or one looks up some recipes online. The best recipe I have found yet involves making spaghetti sauce the normal way and then adding a can of coconut milk. As is the case with many other changes in my life in the past 15 years, I am sure I will never make plain spaghetti sauce ever again.

Here's a good one: bacon, coconut milk, vegetable, egg + fried rice.

Indian curry is another good idea, as with Thai it is easy and inexpensive to get restaurant quality food in the kitchen. The key is to cook up some 'garbanzos' to create the base of the curry.

Growing up with European-American food you learn it's good to simmer things, and sometimes leftovers taste better because the food gets more suffused with the onion, garlic, parsley, sage, as time passes. With Asian food, which may have a shorter simmering time, you fry or pop the spices in oil, as the beginning of the cooking process.

As of yet there's just not as much work put into these Czech names as the Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese names. I suppose after a long time passes new names will evolve, one definitely starts developing ideas for place names as one goes along with one's studies. Western place names are "place holders" that sometimes are interesting, and provide a workable phonetic translation product.

It's difficult but not impossible to find some productive thread of meaning in these translations, its difficult but not impossible to produce some kind of readable English expresssion, of the Chinese translation, of the Czech name. And it certainly is difficult to compile this list without it seeming very arbitrarily composed.

Brno has made me thoughtfult. "Squall at the market" is quite a concept, it led me to google "floating village" where I found a nice video of a trip to a town in Tonle Sap in Chinese Yahoo. This waterworld looks a lot like the landworld near it and there is an airconditioned church. The name of the video is 'Chong Khneas Floating Village on Tonie Sap Lake near Siem Reap Cambodia'.

As far as Czech is concerned, the national football team has been doing quite well, soccer and UEFA are not well-covered on ESPN and on national sports radio, it brings up a little-known aspect of Confucianism, "Geopolitical Confucianism", wherein we as European-Americans are supposed to pay attention to our ancestors across the pond. Given all the events of the last 100 years, it would be a good idea to do so. One gains merit in the act of watching sports. Perfectly amazing.

This is nice; it's Niigata Prefecture on the north shore of Japan. My student was from Niigata; like continental Northeast Asia, there is a lot of snow. The northerly winds get all snown out as they cross the Alps and during the winter Tokyo and the South Shore is very dry, winter in Tokyo is 5 / 40F degrees in the daytime. In the Tokyo summer there is an onshore wind and it rains a lot, then there is rainy season, and then it rains for 10 weeks more.

Considering how easy it is to muse on stuff while reading through these Niigata values, which of course now look like American values, it's quite different from trying to muse on stuff while reading through Kumamoto values, where the miracle of life is so unavoidable.

It's common knowledge in America that Southern Japan including the Kumamoto area, which faces China, and the Osaka-Kyoto-Kobe area a few 100 km north, traditionally served as defense against China.

The Chinese language was adopted in Japan between 200 and 400 AD, by the time the Osaka-Kyoto-Kobe area had developed a short time later, it was such an astounding accomplishment, doing as well or better than the Chinese had ever done, like New York and Washington surpassing Paris and London. It's a perfectly amazing city area, maybe like Moscow and or Athens.

As opposed to naming your city after a security breach, which seems to me to be a way to put the government's problems squarely in front of you all day, the Kumamoto people have a different method of nomenclature. This diagram, of the use and regeneration of citric acid and all its attendant molecules, is perfectly typical of very very many molecules that have similarly configured lifecyles in biology, in all the different departments of biological function: metabolic, neurologic, reproductive, etc.

Citric Acid is a valuable molecule, it participates in metabolism, it is one of many valuable molecules in biochemistry studies, it happens to be a flavor molecule found in lemons, limes, grapefruit, tomatoes, pineapples, kiwifruit, lemon candy, et cetera. Dehydrated lemons and limes are up to 8% citric acid!

Citric acid is an important nutrient, and when it "does what it does", it changes, into cis-Acotinate, according to the diagram's second step going clockwise, and continues changing step by step until it is regenerated into another citric acid molecule. It's like a circular assembly line.

There are 10 step molecules in this citric acid circular diagram, there are other molecules that exist during this cycle. There are also molecules that participate in making each step, and breathed oxygen and glucose from food are used along the way.

It's a good idea to read Chinese, the capacity for understanding is there whether it is used or not. At first it seems as though all the words are expressed together in the mind's eye. After a while of sorting through the material one gets to a time when the human capacity to recognize faces gets a major confidence upgrade. That's when it starts to seem funny. This happened to me in 1990 and I'm not sure what the downside is. Well, actually, there is a downside, it's a certain kind of new responsibility that as a European or American, one doesn't necessarily have the training to understand. I guess I could express it by saying that now, when I watch The X-Files, that scary show on Fox TV with Mulder and Scully, that the storylines all remind me of business owners and factory managers trying to stay alive in 3rd world countries. This explanation is maybe unsatisfying and difficult to understand, but people have been trying to describe this Asian process for a long time now, I thought I would give it a try.

Or maybe its like there is a series of vast warehouses out West that are full of stuff that no one has ever taken care of, that have been hit by tornadoes down through the years, and one has gotten a summer job organizing the material in the warehouse.

Here's a look at the Russian business articles I created on the Wikipedia. There were a dozen other Russian business articles on the Wikipedia when I started my work, most of them about famous companies, most of them poorly written. I stayed in close touch with the Russian wikicommunity for a year, while I wrote articles, and I can safely say that with my daily attention to the new Russian articles page and the Category:Companies of Russia (and the Ukraine and Belarus) that just one single article about a Russian company was written by someone other than me during this time. I learned some Cyrillic and filled out the English half of the RTS Top 50, as well as paying attention to the MICE (Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange) lists.

Since that time I've written 10x as many articles about African-based companies, and of course the Wikisituation is the same, I find few people writing about companies in English; the French Wikipedia is a good source of articles from Africa d'Francophonie

It doesn't make sense to overidealize and paragonize football, as it's always just about football in the first place; maybe this is something John Madden would say. It feels good to try to understand one's personal universe in terms of football, to say "The New England Patriots are letting me down" doesn't make any football sense. The New England Patriots weren't trying to idolize themselves in the first place, and they are certainly not interested in making the fans feel bad now a days.

If people, teams, organizations, sports media people, can make some hay out of a good look, then that's just great. Let's all have a good time on Sunday.

Going to film school one learns a lot of everyday truths that play out on the national and international stage. It is different to be a film producer than it is to be a film actor. A producer knows something about the ill effects of producing something nice for people to enjoy. I performed a little dedication to Buddhism before I wrote this article. I don't want to get jammed because the article is way too happy.

The word "Li" is one of the commonest surnames in East Asia, it has been used for millenia. It's close to the word "Li" meaning "season of the year". The word we're talking about has a dictionary meaning of "plums". Now we have plums out here in America; they are more or less sweet, like melong. The plums in this discussion are like the umeboshi of Japan and the sweet-and-sour plums at the Chinese or Korean grocery. These plums of Asia, especially the umeboshi, are the most insanely sour food known to man. I haven't tasted everything, but I'm not really exaggerating. Maybe on the Simpsons Chili Cook Off episode Homer Simpson ate some "Guatemalan Insanity Peppers"; the umeboshi is at that level. Sometimes ignorant people criticize Japanese cuisine for not having very much chile in it; these plums really give up the lie. One ordinary type of box lunch is just a bunch of boiled rice with a single ume on it.

The agent of sour in this case is citric acid, which makes fruit and vegetables sour. Lemons, limes, tomatoes, pineapple. There is a SuperLemon candy available at the store in Japan, that is manufactured to be as sour as a preserved plum. A student in my English class gave me one; I wasn't exactly paying attention and I sat there motionless for a minute enjoying the citric acid dust on the outside of the candy. My class enjoyed it.

So, what is it? What is so sour? Well in looking at this word, one sees "wood" and one sees "baby". It is vertical, wood over baby. Since the word "wood" looks like a sphincter, one puzzles over the word, trying to understand it reasonably correctly, and one reflects on one's sex life, and one eventually permanently decides that this nice word is a woman crawling around giving birth to a baby. It's a sexy situation.

Reflecting on the question of the word's usage and the question of "Where would a woman crawl around while giving birth?" the next permanent answer is "at a party". The reason one decides that it is a party is that the word so popular of a surname, and is always used in the most cheerful contexts. It is close to the word "season of the year", which in our agrarian past has always had everything to do with life and generation. Women don't usually have babies all on their lonesome.

So, in summary, this word Li is really great, as a conversation topic, especially after work in mixed company; it's a little distracting to one's work as an insurance broker or machine shop foreman to be studying this concept in depth during work hours, but the minute 4 or 5 o'clock rolls around, the beer starts flowing and young adults (and teenagers) turn to the project of building their families.

Think of how not one movie star or tv star ever really goes off against Hollywood. Considering that there are many hundreds of known stars out there, and that this is America, the fact that it is pretty much unknown for a star to dis his or her own show, means that there must be some massive enforcement system in place.

Think of it. The chances of Matthew Perry, star of NBC's Friends, if he decided to embark on an irritated crusade against his former employer, is just nil. "Friends sucks", which is too obvious of a thing to say, is taboo for him and taboo for every person in the "industry". Some industry. Maybe Michael Moore could take a look at this. We need some fresh air.

I am a film major. And by "dis your own show" I mean really try to sink it. We have a lot of GE stock out there, so don't screw up, that's a lot of jet engines.

Note to actors and actresses: If you are going to criticize your own shows, be nice about it as people really like the material. "This blog sucks."

Originally I tabbed this Ming Dynasty poet as "Sugary Sweet Hollywood Shark". To generalize, I will use "Sugar Shark" for the time being, and I hope it works out. Apple Records is the Dickensian songwriter of the Ming Dynasty, who sang of the joys and tribulations of working on farms all summer and then returning to the city for the winter. It's kind of like movies that take place at the Poconos summer resorts, or Meatballs, or even part of Caddyshack, except its a little different. Strawberry Fields forever. "I wish the wheat combine had already been invented." "Don't complain, brother."

Some of these have some kind of double title, mildly confusing like a deep Beatles song. These tx's all avoid the really really boring typical method, exemplified by stuff like "The stork visits the holy mountain/My thoughts are far away/the bell sounds in the distance/The ocean comforts me" that definitely don't deliver any congruent value to the reader. Ming means "Bright, brilliant, the combined power of the sun and the moon, love you night and day, tomorrow". Ming is used in the words Minnesota and Minneapolis. Another Ming is a very important word meaning "Fame", "Name" or "Noun" and is used in the word "Nagoya" (Japan).

Cultural references that seem ridiculous are probably just the result of too much Butthole Surfers and too much Maximum Rock n Roll. In particular, something like: "张以宁　 I weaseled sex out of Tricia Nixon." Sorry. The message is that it's a ridiculous notion to be attracted to thin young Republicans.

I found this song on Ishici under the author's name: 张衡. In creating this link on blogger, I noticed that the author's name was part of the web address; apparently words now have some kind of accepted set of http valence. In terms of the internationalization of the words, one reading experience I had concerned an Asian magazine I was reading that had an example of a page from a French dictionary book about words, the French commentary was so good, it talked about the word as though it were a friend, following along with how I had learned to read. When I write about Asian words, I always think of that French method, it goes so well with all the scholarship I have learned in the English language, and informs my reading so rewardingly.

At any rate, this song is about Suzyn Waldman from Newton. If you don't ever listen to Yankees baseball then it's about Rosie O'Donnell. Apparently mythic archetypes like John and Suzyn have been around forever. It would be appropriate for me to to add translations to the lines, but the topic matter is stodgy, tough and suprasentimental, like Suzyn. It's a very funny poem, though. It's from Ishici, a web resource with over 20,000 Chinese songs dating from ancient times to Hu Jin Tao times. This one is from sometime during one of the Han dynasties.
